A sudden detour:
On the corner up ahead
magpies are swooping.
From August to late November/early December, it’s swooping season. Some magpies turn from melodious serenaders into dangerous missiles in the sky – intent on protecting their nests, even when the threat is just an innocent passer by.
On this day, I noticed the local postman riding his bike along the footpath. One minute he was doing his morning mail delivery, the next he shot across the road recklessly, ducking his head as he went. Although he was quite a distance from me, I immediately realised the cause.
